Here's the scenario we'd like you never to experience:
You book. You're up at 5am. You ride 70km to Moc Bai. You queue.
The officer flips through your passport, reads one line, and shakes his head.
Trip over. Money gone. And your visa is still about to expire.
The cruellest part: all seven mistakes below happen BEFORE you board the tour coach. And every one of them can be caught in five minutes — if you know where to look.
❌ MISTAKE 1 — Passport under 6 months, or no blank pages
The mistake that kills the trip at the very first counter.
What happens: you need a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date you re-enter Vietnam, with at least 2 blank pages.
The requirement applies on both sides: Cambodia also requires a passport valid for at least 6 months with blank pages remaining.
What you lose: the entire cost of the trip. And you go home with a visa that's still about to expire.
⚠️ The subtle trap: "6 months remaining" is not counted from today — it's counted from the day you re-enter. If your passport has 6 months and 2 days left today, and your visa run is in three days — you already don't qualify.
How to avoid it (30 seconds): open your passport. Read the expiry date. Count from the day you plan to come back. Then count the pages that are completely blank.
❌ MISTAKE 2 — Declaring the WRONG checkpoint on your E-Visa
The most painful one, because you're holding a perfectly valid visa.
What happens: when you apply for an E-Visa, you must declare your intended entry checkpoint.
🔑 An E-Visa MUST be used to enter at the checkpoint you declared. You may exit anywhere — but you may not enter anywhere.
Declared "Tan Son Nhat", then did a land visa run via Moc Bai? Your visa is valid — but useless where you're standing.
What you lose: the E-Visa fee (USD 25 / USD 50) — non-refundable. Plus the trip. Plus the wait to reapply (up to 15 working days).

❌ MISTAKE 3 — Boarding the tour coach before your E-Visa is APPROVED
The most dangerous one — it strands you abroad.
What happens: you file the E-Visa, see "processing", and think "it'll come through by tomorrow."
The official process can take UP TO 15 WORKING DAYS.
You exit into Cambodia. You stand in Bavet. And your Vietnamese visa still hasn't been approved.
What you lose: you cannot get back into Vietnam. You stay in Cambodia — paying for a room, waiting, hoping. This isn't hypothetical; it happens.
🔴 THE SURVIVAL RULE: NEVER leave Vietnam until you have an APPROVED E-Visa in hand.
Not "submitted". Not "processing". Approved, downloaded, printed.
How to avoid it: file the E-Visa early. Hold your spot on the tour only after the visa is approved.
❌ MISTAKE 4 — You're ALREADY overstaying before you set off
And this is the one most people get exactly backwards.
Many think: "I'm a bit overdue — I'll do a visa run and reset it."
No. You aren't even permitted to exit.
Article 27 of the Immigration Law provides that a foreigner may exit only with: a passport · a VALID temporary residence certificate · no suspension of exit.
Overstaying = your certificate is no longer valid = NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT.
What you lose: you're stopped at the exit counter — before you even leave Vietnam. And now you face the violation, with Decree 282/2025 waiting: VND 500,000 – 2,000,000 (under 16 days), VND 5–10 million (from day 16).
How to avoid it: if you're already overstaying, don't book the Visa Run Tour. Report proactively to the Immigration Division first.

🔔 The first four mistakes share one root cause

Mistake 1 — didn't check the passport in time. Mistake 2 — filed in a rush, no time to think about the return. Mistake 3 — not enough time to wait for approval. Mistake 4 — already overstaying before starting.
Every one of them is a mistake of HASTE.

❌ MISTAKE 5 — Forgetting the THIRD COUNTRY's entry requirements
Everyone worries about the Vietnamese visa. Very few remember they have to get INTO Cambodia first.
What happens: a visa run via Moc Bai means exit Vietnam → enter Cambodia → exit Cambodia → enter Vietnam.
Step two needs documents too.
Depending on your nationality, you may need a Cambodian visa. A Cambodian visa at the border allows a 30-day stay, single entry; the reference cost is around USD 35 (which may vary by nationality); requirements include a passport valid over 6 months, at least 2 blank pages, and two 4x6cm photos on a white background.
⚠️ Be careful with the Cambodian eVisa. Some service providers warn that a Cambodian eVisa does not guarantee entry at land border crossings — immigration officers may refuse it.
We neither confirm nor deny that warning — but check directly with the Cambodian authorities before relying on an eVisa for a land crossing.
What you lose: you've left Vietnam but can't get into Cambodia — stranded in the strip between two checkpoints.
How to avoid it: carry two 4x6cm white-background photos. They cost almost nothing, and they save you at the border.
❌ MISTAKE 6 — Confusing a Visa Run with a Border Run
Two different things. Pick the wrong one and the whole trip is pointless.

What happens if you pick wrong:
- You're NOT visa-exempt but you do a Border Run → you leave Vietnam with nothing to come back on.
- You ARE visa-exempt but you buy the Visa Run Tour → you pay for an E-Visa you didn't need.
How to avoid it: ask one question — "Do I need a visa to enter Vietnam?"

❌ MISTAKE 7 — Going on the very last day
This one doesn't wreck the trip. It wrecks your LIFE if anything at all goes wrong.
What happens: your stamp expires on the 20th. You book your spot on the tour for the 20th.
Then: the tour coach breaks down. The border is jammed. The system goes down. An officer asks for another document. It pours with rain.
Now you're overstaying — at a border checkpoint.
What you lose: a routine trip turns into an administrative violation.
How to avoid it: go at least 3–5 days before your deadline. It's the cheapest advice in this entire article, and the advice that saves the most people.

One box unticked? Don't book yet. Ask first.
⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "My passport has 6 months left, that's enough." → CHECK AGAIN. Six months from the day you re-enter, not from today.
❌ "My E-Visa is processing; it'll be through by my travel date." → DON'T GAMBLE. The official process can take up to 15 working days. Leave Vietnam without approval and you're stranded in Cambodia.
❌ "Any checkpoint works — a visa is a visa." → FALSE. An E-Visa must be used to enter at the declared checkpoint.
❌ "I've overstayed, so I'll do a visa run to reset it." → YOU CAN'T. Under Article 27, overstaying means you're not eligible to exit. You'll be stopped on your way out of Vietnam.
❌ "A Visa Run and a Border Run are the same." → DIFFERENT. Visa Run = get a new visa. Border Run = reset a visa-exempt stamp. Wrong choice = wasted trip.
❌ "I'm only there for a day, so I don't need Cambodian documents." → FALSE. You are still entering Cambodia, even for 20 minutes. Entry is entry.
❌ "The operator handles everything; I don't need to prepare." → NOBODY CAN STAND AT THE COUNTER FOR YOU. The operator handles the tour coach and the guidance. But the passport is yours, and the officer speaks to you — not to them.
