The short answer: yes — but only if you qualify
Many people in Vietnam on a tourist/E-Visa find a job and ask: "Can I convert straight to a work visa without leaving the country?"
🔑 It's neither "convert freely" nor "impossible". Vietnam does allow changing your visa type/purpose IN-COUNTRY — but only for eligible cases. The usual gatekeeper: you must have a WORK PERMIT + a sponsoring company.
⚖️ The general rule
Under Law 51/2019/QH14 (and the Law 23/2023 relaxation): in principle, a visa can't be used to change your purpose of entry at will — EXCEPT in the eligible cases below.
✅ When you CAN convert in-country
You may change your visa type/purpose without leaving if you fall into one of these:
- You have a work permit (or work-permit exemption) and are invited/sponsored by an agency/organisation in Vietnam → convert to a work (LĐ) visa
- You entered on an E-Visa but already hold a work permit / work-permit exemption
- You're an investor / representative of a foreign organisation investing in Vietnam → investor (ĐT) visa
- You have documents proving a family relationship with a Vietnamese citizen (spouse/child…) → family/temporary-residence (TT) visa → Marriage & TT visa
💡 The process (when eligible): the sponsoring company files with the Immigration Office (Hanoi/HCMC), usually ~5 working days, fee depending on the target visa type. (Figures are indicative — check the current rules.)
🔑 The gatekeeper: work permit + a sponsoring company
The crux: to convert to a work visa, you need a work permit — which your employer obtains first, with sponsorship. No sponsoring company / no work permit → you generally can't convert on your own.
⚠️ Don't work while on a tourist visa. A tourist visa doesn't permit employment; working "under the table" can mean fines and stay complications.
🔁 What a visa run can — and can't — do
- ✅ Can: a Visa Run Tour renews a TOURIST stay (exit/re-enter on a fresh E-Visa) when E-Visas/exemptions can't be extended in-country
- ❌ Can't: a visa run does not turn a tourist visa into a work visa. Working legally still requires a work permit + work visa

🧭 If you don't qualify yet
- Have your employer start the work-permit + sponsorship process
- Meanwhile, keep your stay legal (within your E-Visa; if needed, a Visa Run Tour to avoid overstaying)
- For the conversion/work-permit paperwork, use a qualified immigration service/lawyer — this is legal work to get right

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "I can switch tourist to work visa anytime." → Only if you qualify (usually a work permit + sponsorship).
❌ "A visa run makes it a work visa." → No. A visa run only renews a tourist stay.
❌ "I've got a job, I'll work now and sort papers later." → Don't. Working on a tourist visa is not permitted.
❌ "Converting a visa is a solo DIY task." → The work route needs a sponsoring company to file; use a professional service.
❌ "E-Visas can be extended in-country like work visas." → No. E-Visas/exemptions can't be extended in-country — you need a visa run; work/investor/business visas can be extended with sponsorship.
