Bringing money into Vietnam: no cap, but declare above the threshold

Good news: there's no maximum on how much cash you can bring into Vietnam. But above a certain threshold you must declare it at customs — simple, free, but mandatory.

🔑 The threshold to remember: carrying more than USD 5,000 (or foreign-currency equivalent) OR more than VND 15,000,000 in cash → you MUST declare at customs on arrival. Below that, no declaration needed.

💵 The limit

• USD 5,000 (or equivalent in other foreign currency) or VND 15,000,000 in cash → no declaration needed
• Above the threshold → you must fill in a declaration form at border-gate customs (red channel)
• No maximum — bring as much as you like, just declare above the threshold

🧮 What counts — and what doesn't

• ✅ Counts: cash — foreign currency and Vietnamese dong
• ❌ Doesn't count (not in this threshold): bank cards, traveller's cheques, savings books, securities and other valuable papers

💡 Since cards don't count toward the threshold, bringing most of your money on a card/account and withdrawing VND locally is usually neater than carrying lots of cash. → Banking & money for foreigners

📝 How to declare & why to keep the receipt

• Fill in the customs declaration form (personal details, amount, denomination). For large sums, customs may ask for proof of the funds' origin (exchange receipts, bank statements)
• Declaring is not taxed or charged — it's just a declaration
• Keep the customs-certified declaration/receipt, because:
  • It protects you when TAKING money OUT (proof you brought it in)
  • If you want to deposit foreign cash into a Vietnamese bank account, the bank usually needs this form (even below the threshold)

🥇 Gold

Carried gold also has declaration rules above the set limit. If you carry a significant amount of gold, declare it to avoid a violation — check the current rules before you travel.

⚠️ What if you don't declare?

Under Decree 169/2026 (effective 1 July 2026), failing to declare / misdeclaring cash or gold above the limit can bring an administrative fine of VND 1–50 million (depending on value), without criminal prosecution in this band. Declaring fully is the safest choice.

✅ Golden rule: if in doubt, declare. It's free and avoids trouble.

💡 Practical tips

• Don't carry too much cash — use cards/ATMs and change VND as needed
• Change a little VND at the airport (rates are usually poor), the rest at a reputable place
• Keep proof of funds if carrying a large amount
• See the customs process → Arriving in Vietnam first time

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "There's a cap on how much I can bring in." → No. No maximum — you just declare above the threshold.

❌ "Money on my card must be declared too." → No. The threshold is cash only; cards/cheques/books don't count.

❌ "Declaring gets me taxed." → No. Declaring is just a procedure — no fee or tax.

❌ "Under USD 5,000 I never need a form." → To deposit foreign cash into a Vietnamese bank, you still need the form even below the threshold.

❌ "Not declaring is no big deal." → You can be fined up to VND 50 million (Decree 169/2026).
