You're asking the wrong question

You searched "Vietnam visa extension". You'll find dozens of answers — each one different.

The reason is simple: people use ONE word for TWO completely different procedures.

📖 THE GLOSSARY — READ THIS TABLE FIRST AND EVERYTHING CLEARS UP

🎯 If you're on an E-Visa or a visa exemption — you don't need an "extension". You need a RENEWAL.

And the good news is: renewal is far easier. Nobody needs to sponsor you.

Two roads. Most people take the right-hand one — without knowing its name.

🏢 PART 1 — EXTENSION: WHO QUALIFIES, WHO DOESN'T

First truth

An E-Visa CANNOT be extended from inside Vietnam.

The Immigration Department issues the E-Visa as a fixed-validity entry permit. There is currently no in-country extension procedure for this visa type.

The dates on your E-Visa are LOCKED the moment it's issued — they cannot be edited, extended or shifted.

Second truth

Visa exemptions cannot be extended either.

If you entered under the 45-day visa exemption (Russia, South Korea, Japan, UK, France, Germany…) — you cannot extend that period from inside Vietnam.

So WHO can extend?

According to information the Vietnamese government provided to the U.S. Embassy: extensions apply to foreigners holding WORK visas or other SPONSORED, NON-TOURIST visas — and they must work with their sponsor.

If you're in the extendable group

• File at least 5–7 WORKING DAYS ahead (not 5–7 days — weekends don't count)
• Your visa must still be VALID — expired means you're overstaying, not extending
• You must keep the ORIGINAL purpose — no extending a tourist visa in order to work
• Passport valid for more than 6 months
• Portal: dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn
• 🔴 Proof of temporary residence registration required — many people fail here

🚌 PART 2 — RENEWAL: THIS IS WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED

If you're on an E-Visa or visa exemption — skip Part 1 entirely. This is your road.

Three steps. Nobody needs to sponsor you.

✅ Step 1 — Leave Vietnam before your stay expires

Via a land border (fastest and cheapest) or by air.

⚠️ DOMESTIC FLIGHTS DO NOT COUNT.

Hanoi → Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang → Phu Quoc — that is NOT leaving Vietnam. Your visa keeps running.

You must actually CROSS AN INTERNATIONAL BORDER.

✅ Step 2 — Apply for a NEW E-Visa

Apply from ABROAD. You cannot apply from inside Vietnam.

• USD 25 (single) / USD 50 (multiple) — non-refundable
• Standard processing: 3–5 working days
• 💡 You can apply up to 12 MONTHS before your intended entry date — apply early so you have time to fix any errors

✅ Step 3 — Re-enter with a fresh 90 days

The clock starts over.

This is what everyone mistakenly calls an "extension". Its real name is a VISA RUN.

🎁 AND IF YOU'RE VISA-EXEMPT — THERE'S VERY GOOD NEWS

There used to be a rule requiring a 30-day wait between two visa-free entries.

✅ That 30-day rule was REMOVED in 2022.

Which means: citizens of the 45-day visa-exempt countries (Russia, South Korea, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland) can exit and re-enter IMMEDIATELY — and receive a fresh 45 days.

No E-Visa needed. No waiting. Just your passport.

⚠️ But still read PART 5 — because there are real-world limits.

☠️ PART 3 — TRAP #1: THE DATE ON YOUR VISA ISN'T YOUR DATE

The most important section here. And it applies to E-Visas too.

🚨 VISA VALIDITY ≠ PERMITTED LENGTH OF STAY.

In some cases, the immigration officer at the port of entry may stamp an exit date in your passport that DIFFERS from the one on your E-Visa.

✅ THE STAMPED DATE IS THE ONE YOU MUST FOLLOW.

CHECK THE STAMP IMMEDIATELY AFTER ENTRY. If there's a discrepancy — contact local immigration.

The circled number is YOUR date. Not the one on the E-Visa.

✅ DO THIS NOW — 30 SECONDS

1. Open your passport.
2. Find your most recent entry stamp.
3. Read the permitted-stay expiry date on it.
4. Compare it with your E-Visa.

Different? → THE STAMP is your date.

And remember: you need time for BOTH — the trip to the border AND 3–5 working days for the new E-Visa. Thirty days' notice is just enough. Three days' notice is far too late.

⏰ PART 4 — THREE TIMING TRAPS WHEN RENEWING AN E-VISA

🪤 Trap 1 — The "valid from" date burns your visa

Both dates on your E-Visa are set the moment you apply. Once issued, they are LOCKED — they cannot be edited, extended or shifted.

Declare "valid from 1 August" but actually fly on 20 August, and you get NO extra days. The exit date stays exactly where it is.

You just burned 19 days of your own visa.

Declare the date you actually intend to arrive. Not sure? Wait until you have the ticket.

🪤 Trap 2 — "3–5 working days" isn't "3–5 days"

File on a Friday → Saturday and Sunday don't count → 7–8 real days. Land on Tết, 30 April or 2 September → add a whole week.

🪤 Trap 3 — Rejection costs USD 25 and resets you to zero

The fee is non-refundable, including on rejection. Reapplying means paying again and waiting another 3–5 working days.

If you only left a 5-day buffer — one rejection means you overstay.

🚩 PART 5 — THE REAL LIMIT OF RENEWING FOREVER

We sell this service. And we'll still say it plainly:

Renewing too frequently can raise suspicion of USING YOUR VISA FOR THE WRONG PURPOSE — leading to VISA REFUSAL or a TEMPORARY ENTRY BAN.

There is no official number telling you "how many is too many".

But the logic is clear: if your record shows you are effectively LIVING in Vietnam on back-to-back tourist visas — you are in grey territory.

✅ When to move to a sustainable path

• You've renewed 3–4 times in a row
• You are working in Vietnam
• You have family in Vietnam
• You plan to stay more than a year

→ It's time to find a SPONSOR and move into the DN / LĐ / TT / ĐT categories — or apply for a Temporary Residence Card (TRC).

Renewal is a BRIDGE. Not a HOUSE.

🆕 PART 6 — WHAT CHANGED ON 1 JULY 2026

• 🆕 New preferential visas UĐ1 / UĐ2 — talent categories, valid up to 5 years
• 🔒 Tighter residence management + data integration — your entry/exit history and residence registration are now far easier to cross-check
• 💻 More procedures moving online

The second point matters most if you renew repeatedly: your data is now joined up. The grey area is narrowing.

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "I'll extend my E-Visa for another 90 days." → THAT PROCEDURE DOESN'T EXIST. E-Visas cannot be extended from inside Vietnam. You must exit and apply for a NEW one. Same outcome — completely different process.

❌ "I need a company to sponsor me in order to stay." → NOT TRUE FOR E-VISAS. Renewing an E-Visa needs no sponsor. Sponsors are only required for an EXTENSION (DN/LĐ/TT/ĐT categories).

❌ "Flying from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City counts as leaving Vietnam." → NO. Domestic flights do not count. You must actually cross an international border.

❌ "My visa says 30 October, so I can stay until 30 October." → NOT NECESSARILY. The officer may stamp a DIFFERENT date. The stamped date is the one you must follow. Check it right after entry.

❌ "I'll declare an early start date to be safe." → YOU'RE BURNING YOUR OWN VISA. The dates are locked at issue. Arriving late means losing those days — the exit date doesn't move.

❌ "Visa-exempt travellers must wait 30 days before re-entering." → THAT RULE WAS REMOVED IN 2022. Citizens of the 45-day exempt countries can exit and re-enter consecutively.

❌ "I can renew as many times as I like." → BE CAREFUL. Too frequently can trigger suspicion of visa misuse → refusal or a temporary entry ban. Renewal is a bridge, not a permanent solution.

❌ "My visa expired, so now I'll apply for an extension." → YOU CAN'T. An extension requires a still-valid visa. Expired means you're OVERSTAYING — and an overstayer is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT (Article 27, Law 47/2014). You can't do a visa run either.
