What is a visa run? The answer in one sentence
🚌 You leave Vietnam through a land border, then re-enter — to start a fresh, valid period of stay.
That's it. There's no mystery to it.
You exit legally. You re-enter legally. With valid documents, through an official border gate, stamped by an Immigration officer.
But there is one group of people who absolutely cannot do a visa run — and if that's you, you need to know now, not when you're already on the bus.
👥 PART 1 — WHO NEEDS A VISA RUN?
✅ You're visa-exempt and running out of days
You entered on your passport alone and got 45 days (or whatever your nationality allows). It's running out, and you want to stay.
✅ You're on an E-Visa and it's about to expire
An E-Visa lasts up to 90 days. And you cannot apply for a new one from inside Vietnam — you must leave the country first.
That's why visa runs exist: you're forced to go out. A visa run is simply the fastest way to go out and come back in the same trip.
✅ You want to reset the clock legally, without disruption
No international flight, no days off work. Leave at night, back the next evening.
⛔ PART 2 — WHO CANNOT DO A VISA RUN
This is the most important section in this article. Read it carefully.
🚨 IF YOU HAVE ALREADY OVERSTAYED — YOU CANNOT DO A VISA RUN.
Not "shouldn't." CANNOT.
Article 27, Law 47/2014/QH13: a foreigner who has overstayed their visa is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT Vietnam.
What actually happens
You're 10 days overstayed. You book a Visa Run Tour. You board the bus. It drives 8 hours to the border. You hand your passport to the EXIT desk.
→ YOU ARE STOPPED. RIGHT THERE.
You can't get out. You can't come back in. You're standing at a border, 470 km from home, with a bigger problem than the one you left with.
A visa run does not erase an overstay. It drives you straight to the place where the overstay gets discovered.
🛑 And here is ViEntry's promise
If you have overstayed, we will REFUSE to connect you with a Visa Run Tour.
Not because we're strict. Because taking your booking means letting you spend money on a trip to a door that will not open.
You must resolve the overstay first.
🔔 Not overstayed yet? Make sure you never are.
Nobody overstays on purpose. They simply… forget.
People who overstay aren't lazy. They're people who thought they still had time.
👉 Turn on free visa expiry reminders with Visa Tracker — alerts at 30 / 21 / 15 / 7 days. Free, no account needed.
Thirty days out, you have every option. One day past expiry, you have none.
⛔ Three other cases where you shouldn't go
- ❌ Passport valid for under 6 months → sort the passport first (check requirements at
evisa.gov.vn) - ❌ You're subject to an entry ban or exit suspension → contact the competent authority
- ❌ You're eligible for an in-country extension → an extension is cheaper and doesn't cost you 24 hours
⏱️ PART 3 — THE 24-HOUR TIMELINE: WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS
It is not a "day trip", whatever the ads say. Here are the real numbers.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 21:30 – 22:00 (the night BEFORE) | 🚐 Pickup in Nha Trang. You board and sleep on the tour coach. |
| Overnight | 🛣️ The tour coach drives through the night. ~470 km (Moc Bai) or ~450 km (Bo Y). |
| Morning | 🛂 Arrive at the border. Complete EXIT formalities from Vietnam. |
| Morning | 📸 Photograph your exit stamp — required to complete your new E-Visa. |
| Midday | 🛂 Complete RE-ENTRY into Vietnam. New stamp. New period of stay. |
| Afternoon | 🚐 The tour coach turns around. ~8 hours back. |
| Before 22:00 (the NEXT day) | 🏠 Back in Nha Trang. |
⏳ TOTAL: 23–24 HOURS. Around 16 OF THEM ON THE ROAD WITH THE GROUP.
We put that number in writing because you should know it BEFORE you book — not at 3 a.m. on a highway.
⚠️ These are ViEntry and operating-unit operational figures — not a commitment. Real times depend on traffic, weather and border volume.
🗺️ PART 4 — THE TWO ROUTES FROM NHA TRANG (AND THE TRUTH NOBODY TELLS YOU)
| 🇰🇭 MOC BAI | 🇱🇦 BO Y | |
|---|---|---|
| Border with | Cambodia | Laos |
| Distance | ~470 km | ~450 km |
| The road | Highway, straight | Winding Central Highlands passes |
| Frequency | Most departures | Fewer departures |
| Crowds | Busiest | Quiet |
💡 And here's what nobody tells you
Moc Bai is FARTHER than Bo Y — by 20 km, roughly 20 minutes.
Both leave at the same time. Both return at the same time. Total trip time is near-identical.
Don't waste time choosing a route. Choose a DATE.
The only difference that actually matters: 🤢 MOTION SICKNESS.
Bo Y crosses winding Central Highlands passes. If you get carsick — take Moc Bai.
Otherwise? There's barely a difference.
📅 Choose your DATE by how much visa you have left
| Visa remaining | What to do |
|---|---|
| 30 days or more | 🟢 Either route. You have time. |
| 20 – 29 days | 🟠 Prefer Moc Bai — more departures, easier to book |
| 10 – 19 days | 🔴 Take the SOONEST departure. Don't pick a route. Pick a date. |
| Under 10 days | 🚨 URGENT. Book the earliest spot available. Message us now. |
| Already overstayed | ⛔ STOP. See Part 2. |
🎒 PART 5 — WHAT TO PREPARE
📄 Required
- Original passport — valid for at least 6 months
- White-background portrait photo — to E-Visa standard
- Photo of your passport page
- Contact details for order updates
🎒 Bring anyway
- Motion sickness tablets (especially on the Bo Y route)
- Power bank — 24 hours, and sockets aren't guaranteed
- A jacket — the tour coach runs air conditioning all night
- Small VND cash — food along the way
- A neck pillow — you'll thank yourself
💰 PART 6 — WHAT THE COST IS MADE OF
We're not putting a number here, because prices vary by route, date and operating unit.
But you need to understand that the cost has TWO SEPARATE PARTS:
| Item | Who collects it | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|
| Government E-Visa fee | The State | ❌ NO — not even if the application is rejected |
| Service fee (transport + file support) | Operating unit | Per the operating unit's policy |
🚩 If a company quotes you ONE lump sum and won't separate these — press them.
You have a right to know how much is State money and how much is service money.
👉 See reference pricing — all prices are for reference; the final price is confirmed by the operating unit at booking.
⚖️ PART 7 — IS A VISA RUN LEGAL?
This is the question you're thinking but not asking. Here's the straight answer.
A visa run is not a loophole. It's two lawful procedures, one after the other.
1. A LAWFUL EXIT — through an official border gate, stamped by an Immigration officer 2. A LAWFUL ENTRY — on a valid E-Visa or under a visa exemption
No step is hidden. Nobody is "skipped past" anything. Immigration officers check you fully in BOTH directions.
⚠️ But one thing must be said plainly
The decision to permit entry ALWAYS rests with the Immigration officer at the border.
Holding a valid E-Visa does NOT guarantee you will be admitted.
No company — including ViEntry — can guarantee you'll be let in.
🚩 If anyone promises you a "100% guaranteed" crossing — they're promising something they don't own.
⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "A visa run is a loophole / a trick." → WRONG. It is a lawful exit plus a lawful entry, fully processed, fully stamped, at an official border gate.
❌ "I've overstayed, so I'll just do a visa run." → COMPLETELY WRONG — and the most dangerous mistake here. Article 27, Law 47/2014: an overstayer is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT. You'll be stopped at the exit desk, 470 km from home.
❌ "A visa run is a day trip." → NO. It's 23–24 hours, departing the night before and returning the next evening. Around 16 hours on the road with the group.
❌ "Moc Bai is closer than Bo Y." → THE OPPOSITE. Moc Bai ~470 km · Bo Y ~450 km. But the gap is ~20 minutes — effectively irrelevant.
❌ "I'm in Vietnam, I'll just apply for a new E-Visa and skip the trip." → YOU CANNOT APPLY FROM INSIDE VIETNAM. You must leave the country first. That is precisely why visa runs exist.
❌ "I have an E-Visa, so I'm guaranteed entry." → NO. The Immigration officer at the border decides. An E-Visa is necessary, not sufficient.
❌ "A visa run and a border run are the same thing." → NO. Two different situations.
❌ "I can do visa runs indefinitely." → BE CAREFUL. Each entry is an independent decision by an Immigration officer. Nobody can promise the Nth time will go like the first.
