⏱️ The short answer
Standard E-Visa processing time: 3 – 5 WORKING DAYS.
Counted from when the Immigration Department receives a complete, valid file and the fee. Files requiring further verification can take longer.
Done. That's the answer.
But if you stop here, you will miss your flight.
Because "3–5 working days" is the number EVERYONE quotes — and it is not the number you need to plan with.
🪤 TRAP #1 — "WORKING DAYS" ARE NOT "DAYS"
You file on Friday afternoon. You think: "3–5 days, so Tuesday."
Count again.
| Day | Counted? |
|---|---|
| Friday (late, after hours) | ❌ Possibly not counted |
| Saturday | ❌ No |
| Sunday | ❌ No |
| Monday | ✅ Working day 1 |
| Tuesday | ✅ Working day 2 |
| Wednesday | ✅ Working day 3 |
| Thursday | ✅ Working day 4 |
| Friday | ✅ Working day 5 |
You thought 3–5 days. It's actually 7. Possibly 8.
🧧 And what about Tết?
Lunar New Year can close offices for a week. Reunification Day (30 Apr–1 May), National Day (2 Sep), New Year — none of them are working days.
Filing right before a long holiday adds an entire week to your wait.
⏰ TRAP #2 — THE CLOCK DOESN'T START WHEN YOU HIT SUBMIT
Read the rule again — word by word:
"...counted from when the Department receives a COMPLETE, VALID file and the fee."
Two key words: COMPLETE · VALID.
If your file is incomplete or wrong — the clock HASN'T STARTED. It starts only when a complete, compliant file is in the system.
Which means: one non-compliant photo doesn't delay you by a day. It delays you from zero.
💸 TRAP #3 — THE EXPENSIVE ONE: REJECTION MEANS STARTING OVER
This is the part nobody tells you.
If your E-Visa is rejected:
❌ USD 25 (or 50) — GONE. The fee is non-refundable, including on rejection. ❌ The 3–5 day clock — RESET TO ZERO. ❌ You reapply, pay again, and wait another 3–5 working days.
Both attempts together: If you only left a 5-day buffer — you've missed your flight.
👉 7 mistakes that get an E-Visa rejected — check your file BEFORE you file it
🧮 THE FORMULA FOR A SAFE FILING DATE
Don't ask "how long does it take." Ask "what's the latest I can file."
LATEST FILING DATE = Flight date − 5 working days (attempt 1) − 5 working days (if you must refile) − holidays − 2 spare days
📅 Three buffers — pick your risk tolerance
| Level | File before your flight by | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 Reckless | 5 working days | Zero room for a single error. One rejection = missed flight. |
| 🟠 Sensible | 2 weeks | Survives one rejection |
| 🟢 Safe | 3–4 weeks | Survives a rejection plus a public holiday. This is what we recommend. |
⚠️ If your flight falls just after Tết, 30 April, or 2 September — add ANOTHER week.
🔔 And if you're ALREADY in Vietnam with a visa about to expire?
Your problem is completely different — and far more urgent.
You CANNOT apply for an E-Visa from inside Vietnam. You must leave Vietnam first, then apply for an E-Visa to come back.
Which means you need time for BOTH: the trip out to the border, AND the 3–5 working days of processing.
If your visa has under two weeks left — you are more pressed for time than you think.

People who miss their deadline aren't lazy. They're people who thought they still had time.
☠️ TRAP #4 — THE KILLER: THE "VALID FROM" DATE
This is the most dangerous trap in the whole process. And almost nobody warns you.
When you apply, you must declare a "Good for entry valid from" date.
⚠️ Your 90 days are counted from the date YOU DECLARE — NOT from the day you actually arrive.
The E-Visa's validity runs from "Good for entry valid from" to "Until" as printed on the visa, regardless of the date the foreigner actually enters. The system uses the start date you declared to compute the 90-day validity.
What that means
Don't declare an early start date "to be safe." You're not buying yourself time — you're THROWING IT AWAY.
Declare the date you actually intend to arrive. If you're not sure — wait until you have the ticket.
🚪 TRAP #5 — WRONG GATE = NOT BOARDING THE PLANE
Entering through a port not selected on the E-Visa can result in denied boarding or entry refusal.
Your E-Visa names the gate you declared. Turn up at a different one — even with a perfectly valid visa — and you can be stopped at the check-in desk abroad.

⚡ SO WHAT IS A "1-HOUR E-VISA"?
You'll see services advertising 1-hour, 2-hour and 4-hour rush E-Visas — including us.
The right question to ask them is: "When does that hour start, and what happens if you're late?"
A decent service can answer both. A scam changes the subject.
Three questions that test any company:
- "When does the clock start?" → It must be: when a COMPLETE valid file is received AND payment is made. Not when you first message them.
- "Does it apply on weekends and public holidays?" → The honest answer is NO. Anyone who says "yes" without explaining — be suspicious.
- "What if you're late?" → There must be a concrete number. "We'll look into it" means there is no policy.
🚩 And if anyone promises a "100% guaranteed visa" — walk away.
No company issues visas. The Immigration Department issues visas. Anyone promising an outcome is promising something they don't own.

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "3–5 working days means 3–5 days." → NO. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays don't count. Filing on a Friday can mean 7–8 real days.
❌ "The clock starts when I hit submit." → NO. It starts when the Department receives a COMPLETE, VALID file and the fee. A non-compliant photo means the clock never started.
❌ "If I'm rejected I get my USD 25 back." → NO. The fee is non-refundable under all circumstances, including rejection. Refiling means paying again.
❌ "I'll declare an early start date just to be safe." → YOU ARE BURNING YOUR OWN VISA. The 90 days run from the date you declare, not the day you arrive. Declare three weeks early = lose three weeks.
❌ "Once I have the E-Visa I can enter through any gate." → NO. The wrong gate can mean denied boarding.
❌ "I'm in Vietnam — I'll just apply for a new E-Visa." → YOU CANNOT APPLY FROM INSIDE VIETNAM. You must leave the country first.
❌ "This company guarantees 100% approval, so they must be reputable." → THE OPPOSITE. Nobody but the Immigration Department issues visas. A 100% guarantee is the clearest scam signal there is.
