Losing your passport abroad is stressful, but the order in which you act matters. The biggest mistake is waiting until your departure day. A replacement passport or emergency travel document from your embassy may not, by itself, be enough to leave Vietnam; Vietnamese Immigration may still need to restore your visa record or issue the necessary exit clearance.
Flying within 72 hours? Contact the local police, your embassy or consulate, and your airline immediately. Do not travel to Cam Ranh Airport with only a passport photo or a loss report and assume you will be allowed to board.
Your first 24 hours
First 60 minutes — make sure it is genuinely missing
- Check the hotel safe, reception desk, luggage and the taxi or ride-hailing vehicle you last used.
- Call the last hotel, restaurant, shop or rental desk where you showed the passport.
- Save any digital copies of the passport, E‑Visa, entry stamp, flight booking and insurance policy.
- If theft is possible, write down when and where it happened and what else is missing.
Do not post an unredacted passport image in a public group. Hide the passport number, date of birth, machine-readable zone and QR codes.
Within 1–4 hours — report it to the nearest police station
Go to the police station closest to where you believe the passport was lost or stolen. Ask for a written police report or confirmation of loss. This Vietnamese-language document may be needed for:
- Your embassy or consulate;
- A replacement passport or emergency travel document;
- A replacement visa or exit clearance;
- A travel-insurance claim.
Be ready to provide your Nha Trang accommodation, contact number, a passport copy if available, arrival date and a clear account of the loss.
The same day — contact your embassy or consulate
Rules differ by nationality. Use only the official website of your embassy or consulate and ask:
- Whether you need a full replacement passport or an emergency travel document;
- Which appointment, photos, fee and identity evidence are required;
- Whether you must travel to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City;
- How long you should allow before rebooking your flight.
Your embassy issues your national travel document. It does not replace or renew your Vietnamese visa.
After receiving the new document — contact Vietnamese Immigration
A new passport or emergency document does not automatically carry over the E‑Visa, entry stamp or permitted-stay record linked to the lost passport. You will need instructions on restoring your immigration record or obtaining permission to depart.
In Nha Trang, the relevant local authority is:
Immigration Division — Khanh Hoa Provincial Police
Address: 47 Ly Tu Trong Street, Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province.
Bring, where available:
- The police report confirming the passport loss;
- The new passport or emergency travel document;
- Copies of the old passport, E‑Visa, visa or entry stamp;
- Passport-style photos requested by the receiving authority;
- Flight and accommodation confirmations;
- Sponsor documents if your visa category or case requires a sponsor.
The exact file depends on your nationality, visa type, purpose of stay and the document issued by your embassy. Do not buy a non-refundable replacement ticket until your embassy, Immigration and airline have confirmed the next steps.
Can you leave Vietnam with an emergency travel document alone?
Do not assume so. The document confirms your identity and right to travel under your own country’s rules, but Vietnam must still confirm your entry and exit status. Official British consular guidance for Vietnam, for example, states that a new passport or emergency document needs an exit visa or Immigration endorsement before departure. Timings vary by case and nationality.
What happens to an E‑Visa linked to the lost passport?
Reprint it from your email or the official lookup page if you still have the application code. The copy helps Immigration verify your entry, but an E‑Visa issued against the old passport number does not automatically transfer to the replacement document.
Six mistakes that cause longer delays
- Waiting several days before reporting the loss.
- Telling only the hotel and not obtaining a police report.
- Immediately buying a new flight before knowing document timings.
- Assuming a phone photo is enough for international travel.
- Ignoring the permitted-stay expiry date while waiting.
- Sending full passport data to an unknown “fast service” contact.
Protect your immigration status while you wait
