First, let's bust a big myth
Many people think "Visa on Arrival (VOA)" means you just fly in, reach the airport, and get a visa on the spot. That is NOT true.
🔑 There's no walk-up "get a visa here" counter for people arriving empty-handed. Whether you choose E-Visa or VOA, you must have valid paperwork BEFORE you fly — the airline checks it at check-in.
There are two common legal routes, differing in how they work:
📊 Quick comparison
| E-Visa | Visa on Arrival (VOA) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's issued | 100% online, issued by the Immigration Department by email | Needs an approval letter obtained in advance via a service, then stamped at the airport |
| Where it's valid | 83 ports (air, land, sea) | Airports only (major international) |
| Approval letter? | No | Yes |
| How you pay | Fee online in advance ($25 single / $50 multiple) | Service fee for the letter + cash stamping fee at the airport |
| Timing | Usually ~3–5 working days | Approval letter usually 1–3 days (urgent, a few hours) |
| At the airport | Show your printout, move through quickly | Queue at the "Landing Visa" counter to get stamped |
(Figures are indicative; check the current rules.)
✅ When the E-Visa is better (most cases)
- You plan ahead (at least a week)
- You enter by land or sea → the E-Visa is the only option; VOA won't work
- You want to avoid queues and cash at the airport
- You want transparent pricing with fewer middlemen

🕐 When VOA still helps
- Urgent/last-minute: you must fly within hours and the E-Visa isn't approved yet (but remember: VOA still needs an approval letter first — it's just faster to arrange)
- You're travelling under a special invitation/sponsorship from a Vietnamese organisation/enterprise
- As a backup if the E-Visa system has an error/payment failure → E-Visa payment failed?
⚠️ Note: since VOA is airport-only, if you plan to enter by land/sea you must use the E-Visa.
🚩 Watch out when arranging a VOA "approval letter"
The approval-letter step is where dodgy agents and fake sites appear: inflated prices, "VIP/guarantee" add-ons, or charging for what should be free.
- For the E-Visa, apply only via the official portal (.gov.vn) or a transparent service with clear pricing
- Don't pay a site mimicking the government portal → Beware fake sites & scams

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "Visa on Arrival means getting a visa at the airport on the spot." → No. You still need an approval letter first; the airline checks at check-in.
❌ "VOA is cheaper because you pay on arrival." → It's usually more expensive: letter fee + airport stamping fee.
❌ "I can use VOA for a land crossing too." → No. VOA is airport-only; land/sea entry needs the E-Visa.
❌ "Just pick either — they're the same." → For most people, the E-Visa is simpler, more flexible, and usually cheaper.
❌ "Vietnam is visa-free for everyone." → No — it depends on nationality; many need an E-Visa or a separate exemption.

- Law 23/2023/QH15 & E-Visa rules — up to 90 days, $25 (single)/$50 (multiple), 83 ports (Res. 389/NQ-CP); VOA requires an approval letter + airport stamping
