Vietnam is great for nomads — except for one thing

Cheap, fast fibre internet, world-famous street food, a big and growing remote-work community. Vietnam ticks nearly every box for a digital-nomad base.

🔑 But there's one thing Vietnam does NOT have: a digital nomad visa. As of 2026, there's no dedicated nomad visa. Here's how nomads actually stay — and it's tied to how you keep a valid visa.

🛂 The visa truth (read this first)

Three common routes, in practical order:

1. The 90-day E-Visa — what the vast majority use Issued to all nationalities, applied for online, supports multiple entries, up to 90 days. This is the backbone of nomad life here. Because it can't be applied for while inside Vietnam, when it expires you exit and renew — usually via a Visa Run Tour (a same-day border-gate tour with new-E-Visa support).

2. The 45-day exemption — if you qualify Some nationalities (including Russia, South Korea…) get 45 days visa-free; good for short or trial stays. → Exemption list

3. Emerging long-term routes From 1 July 2026, the amended Immigration Law added a talent visa (UĐ1) for digital-technology talent (and UĐ2 for family), valid up to 5 years — worth watching if you're in tech. There are also investor/business routes (strict conditions, e.g. large capital). (A long-term "Golden Visa" is proposed but not yet enacted.)

💡 In short: for now, "90-day E-Visa + periodic Visa Run Tour" remains the dominant strategy for nomads in Vietnam.

⚖️ Working remotely in Vietnam: the gray area (straight talk)

This is what many articles dodge. A tourist E-Visa does not authorize local employment in Vietnam. In practice, most nomads enter on a 90-day E-Visa and work online for clients/employers ABROAD, earning income from abroad — which sits in a legal gray area: Vietnam has no dedicated framework for remote work, and enforcement mainly targets people working for Vietnamese companies without a work permit.

🏙️ Choosing a city: where do you fit?

🏖️ Da Nang — the #1 pick for most nomads Beach within cycling distance, the lowest costs of the group, fast internet, a community big enough to sustain itself (the An Thuong / expat beach area is the hub). Coworking like Toong, Base, Enouvo. Downside: thinner community in the off-season (May–Sept), fewer coworking spaces than HCMC.

🌆 Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) — the most coworking & networking The largest coworking scene (Dreamplex, Toong across locations), frequent startup events, big-city energy. Thao Dien (D2) & District 3 are nomad neighbourhoods. Downside: most expensive.

🏛️ Hanoi — cultural depth, easier costs Old Quarter cafe culture suits laptop work, cheaper than HCMC. Downside: winter air quality, traffic.

🎨 Hoi An — quiet, for creatives Ancient town, a growing coliving scene; better for deep-focus/short stays than professional coworking.

✅ Nomad setup checklist

• 💰 Budget: most nomads run $700–1,500/month (coworking ~$30–80/month). → Full cost of living
• 📶 Connectivity: fast, cheap fibre internet; register a SIM in your own name to receive banking OTPs → SIM in your name
• 🏦 Money: consider a Vietnamese account/wallet for long stays; many use Wise to transfer to a VN account → Banking & money
• 🏠 Housing: find via local Facebook/Zalo groups; for short stays start with Airbnb, then hunt in person
• 🛂 Keep your visa valid: schedule a Visa Run Tour before your E-Visa expires

Nomads in Vietnam connect via city-specific Facebook groups, coworking/coliving, and hobby groups. Welcoming, but it takes initiative — coworking events are the fastest way to meet people.

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "Vietnam has a digital nomad visa." → Not yet (as of 2026). Most use the 90-day E-Visa + periodic Visa Run Tour.

❌ "A tourist E-Visa lets me work freely." → An E-Visa doesn't authorize local employment. Remote work for foreign clients sits in a gray area — not legal advice; consult a professional if it's complex.

❌ "I'll just stay put and deal with the E-Visa later." → Overstaying is heavily fined. Schedule a Visa Run Tour before it expires.

❌ "Joining a Visa Run Tour is buying a bus ticket." → No. It's registering to join a border-gate day tour run by a travel unit; the price is a reference price, with the travel unit setting the final price.

❌ "Every city is the same for nomads." → Da Nang for beach + cost; HCMC for networking; Hanoi for culture; Hoi An for quiet.
