The question isn't "which is prettier"

Da Nang and Nha Trang are the two beach cities foreigners most often choose for a long stay in Vietnam. Both have great beaches, manageable costs, and a foreign community.

But they're two different kinds of city. Picking wrong isn't a disaster — it's a few months living in the wrong place.

And one thing nobody tells you upfront: whichever city you choose, the visa math is identical. We'll get to it at the end — because it matters more than the city choice.

✅ Work remotely and need fast internet, coworking, an international nomad scene ✅ Want a real-city feel — cafés, culture, a big international airport ✅ Like being near Hoi An, Ba Na, Hue for weekends ✅ Don't mind the Oct–Nov rainy season (many leave to avoid it)

🚩 PART 4 — THE HONEST DOWNSIDES OF EACH

Neither is perfect. Here's what the brochures skip:

Nha Trang

• Smaller English-speaking nomad community than Da Nang
• The central Trần Phú strip is loud and touristy
• Fewer professional coworking spaces

Da Nang

• 🌧️ A harsh Oct–Nov rainy season — storms, flooding, mold; many leave to avoid it
• 💰 A two-tier price: the same apartment rents at ~USD 300 for a local and roughly double for a foreigner. Local-language sites (Chợ Tốt / Nhà Tốt) are far cheaper than foreigner-facing ones
• No direct flights from Russia (usually a connection)

💡 A tip for both: don't rent online from abroad. Book a hotel for 1–2 weeks, view in person, rent monthly through local channels. The price gap can be double.

🛂 PART 5 — THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THEY SHARE: THE VISA MATH IS IDENTICAL

This is the part the city choice does NOT change. Whether you're in Nha Trang or Da Nang:

Vietnam has NO simple "nomad visa" to anchor a long stay. Long-stayers — in both cities — cycle on the 90-day E-Visa.

Which means every 90 days (or 45 on the exemption), you must leave Vietnam and re-enter. That clock never stops — in either city.

And since both cities force this on you, the real question is: how to make it the fewest trips with the least risk.

• 90-day E-Visa → a border trip every 90 days
• 45-day exemption → a border trip every 45 days (twice as many)

Stay in Vietnam more than 183 days in a year — or sign a lease that long — and you may become a TAX RESIDENT, with your worldwide income technically in scope.

An overstay isn't just a fine. An overstayer is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT — you can't go to the border to fix it.

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "Da Nang has a digital-nomad visa, so it's easier to stay." → Vietnam has no simple nomad visa to anchor a stay. Long-stayers in both cities cycle on the 90-day E-Visa.

❌ "Nha Trang rains all the time like central Vietnam." → NO. In the northern winter, Nha Trang is dry and sunny — which is exactly why people winter there. Da Nang's heavy storm season is Oct–Nov.

❌ "The online rent price is the real price." → It's usually marked up for foreigners. Local channels (Chợ Tốt / Nhà Tốt) can be half. View in person before renting monthly.

❌ "Once I've picked a city, the visa is sorted." → NO. The visa math is IDENTICAL in both — every 90 (or 45) days you cross a border. The city doesn't change that.

❌ "Flying from Da Nang to Nha Trang resets my visa." → NO. Domestic flights don't count. You must cross an international border.
