A week and four months are two different stories
Nha Trang is the number-one wintering spot for foreigners in Vietnam — especially Russian visitors, who call it "Vietnam's Turkey". Direct flights into Cam Ranh airport, a warm sea through the northern winter, and a whole Russian-speaking service ecosystem.
But a one-week holidaymaker and a four-month winterer live in two different worlds. Long-stayers hit things tourists never touch.
First, one distinction so you don't confuse them:
🧭 WINTERING ≠ RELOCATING. Wintering = staying a few months then leaving, still on a tourist/exemption or E-Visa. Relocating = long-term, needing a residence card and a sponsor. This article is about WINTERING.
🏘️ PART 1 — CHOOSE YOUR AREA BY PURPOSE, NOT BY HOTEL STARS
This is the newcomer's first mistake: book a pretty hotel in the tourist strip, then realise after three weeks you don't want to live there.
Nha Trang has several "zones" with very different rhythms. Choose by WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY DO:
🏖️ 1–2 week beach holiday → the Trần Phú strip (beachfront) The resort heart: 4–5 star hotels, restaurants, nightlife, right on the city beach. Great for a short stay. But loud and pricey if you stay long.
❄️ Wintering for months → a quieter area, an apartment with a kitchen The north of the city (around Hòn Chồng) is cleaner, calmer, more relaxed. Long-stayers usually rent a kitchen apartment by the month instead of a hotel — cook, do laundry, live like home. Far cheaper than Trần Phú.
🏡 Trying out relocation → further from the centre, cheapest rents A few km from the beach, low rent, local feel. You'll need a scooter to get around.
💡 Long-stayer tip: book a hotel for the FIRST 1–2 weeks only, then view apartments in person and rent monthly. Booking sight-unseen from abroad is how you end up with pretty photos and a different reality.
💳 PART 2 — MONEY: THE BIGGEST PAIN NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT
This is the number-one shock for Russian visitors — and it hits on day one.
🛑 Mir cards and most Russian UnionPay cards DON'T work at most terminals in Vietnam, and CAN'T pay on the official E-Visa portal. A VPN doesn't help.
Which means you can't rely on cards alone. A winterer needs a cash plan:
- Bring USD cash to exchange for VND at a reputable gold shop or bank
- Research in advance which transfer/withdrawal channels the community uses
- Keep a buffer for cash-only places
⚠️ But be careful carrying large amounts of cash across the border: from 1 July 2026, Decree 169/2026 sets new customs penalties for undeclared cash and gold — and the penalty for LEAVING Vietnam is higher than for ARRIVING. If you still do visa runs with cash on you, know this.

📶 PART 3 — CONNECTIVITY: SORT IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE AIRPORT
Four months without a Vietnamese number makes everything hard: Grab, reservations, OTP codes, contacting your landlord.

🛵 PART 4 — GETTING AROUND: FROM THE AIRPORT AND AROUND TOWN
Cam Ranh airport (CXR) is about 35 km south of central Nha Trang — roughly a 45-minute drive. Don't get quoted a wild taxi fare when you land tired; a pre-booked transfer is the calm option.

In the city: Grab (bikes & cars) covers it well. Long-stayers often rent a scooter by the month for freedom.
🪪 But mind your licence: a foreign licence or International Driving Permit (IDP) has its own recognition conditions in Vietnam. Riding without valid papers means fines and insurance trouble if anything happens.

🛂 PART 5 — WINTERING'S BIGGEST TRAP: THE VISA
This is the most important section. Because the very thing that makes wintering appealing — staying LONG — is what creates the visa problem.
The simple math
A visa exemption gives you 45 days per entry. But wintering is 3–6 months.
45 days < 3–6 months. You MUST do something in between.
You have two roads:
🛂 Road 1 — A Border Run every 45 days On day 45, go to the border and re-stamp the exemption. Cheaper per trip — but over a 4–5 month winter, you make three trips.
🚌 Road 2 — A 90-day E-Visa (Visa Run) Get a 90-day E-Visa; each border trip is 90 days apart. Over the same winter, you make one to two trips. Half the trips.
Each border trip is a whole day gone, a night on a bus, one more time your passport travels far, one more customs desk. Half the trips means half of all of that.

🔔 And never overstay
A whole relaxed winter can be ruined by one forgotten date. An overstay isn't just a fine — an overstayer is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT, meaning you can't go to the border to fix it.

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "The 45-day exemption means I can stay 3–4 months straight." → NO. It's 45 days per entry. To stay on, renew at the border or use a 90-day E-Visa.
❌ "My Mir card works, so it'll work here too." → USUALLY NOT. Mir and many Russian cards don't work at most places in Vietnam. Bring cash.
❌ "Flying from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City resets my visa." → NO. Domestic flights don't count. You must cross an international border.
❌ "Border Runs are cheaper, so I'll do them all winter." → Not necessarily, over a whole season. Three Border Runs versus one or two Visa Runs — add the time, risk and number of border trips, and a Visa Run is usually lighter for long-stayers.
❌ "I'll just book a nice apartment online from home." → Risky. Online photos often differ from reality. Book 1–2 weeks, view in person, then rent monthly.
