Three ways to stay longer — but they're not equivalent
When a 90-day E-Visa is running out, foreigners usually weigh three directions: joining a Visa Run Tour, applying for a new E-Visa yourself, or finding a way to "extend" on the spot.
🔑 Key thing to know first: a 90-day E-Visa generally CANNOT be extended while you're inside Vietnam. So "extending" is rarely the answer — here's why.

🟦 Option 1 — Visa Run Tour (simplest for most people)
A Visa Run Tour takes you to an international border gate and back in a day, with support to renew your 90-day E-Visa. You get door-to-door pickup and formality support.
→ Best for: people who want to keep staying without arranging transport and paperwork themselves.
🟨 Option 2 — DIY E-Visa (if you like control)
You can file a 90-day E-Visa yourself on the official portal, then arrange your own border crossing — or join a Border Run Tour (just the crossing, you already have the E-Visa).
⚠️ Note: an E-Visa is only issued to people OUTSIDE Vietnam — so you still must exit and re-enter. The E-Visa fee is non-refundable; wrong documents/photo can be rejected. (To reduce rejection risk, an E-Visa service can review your application.)
→ Best for: people comfortable with the process who want to do it themselves.
🟥 Option 3 — "Extension" on the spot (usually NOT viable with an E-Visa)
This is where many people get it wrong. A 90-day E-Visa fundamentally can't be extended while you're inside Vietnam — when it expires you must exit and apply for a new E-Visa.
Long-term stay options (like a Temporary Residence Card – TRC) are a completely different path with strict conditions (a qualifying visa symbol, a sponsor, a passport valid ≥13 months…) — and an E-Visa/exemption does not qualify for a TRC.

- Thinking about an "extension" → check the conditions carefully; with a tourist E-Visa you usually renew, not extend

❌ "A 90-day E-Visa can be extended while inside Vietnam." → Usually NO. You must exit and apply for a new E-Visa.
❌ "Once I file an E-Visa myself I can stay right away, no border needed." → No. An E-Visa is only issued to people outside Vietnam — you still exit and re-enter.
❌ "A Visa Run Tour and DIY E-Visa are the same." → Different: a Visa Run Tour is fully handled (pickup + E-Visa support); DIY means you handle everything.
❌ "Joining a Visa Run Tour is buying a bus ticket." → No. It's registering to join a border-gate day tour run by a travel unit.
❌ "Anyone can get a TRC to avoid the trips." → A TRC has strict conditions; an E-Visa/exemption doesn't qualify.
