Why read this: On 1 July 2026, Vietnam's amended immigration law officially took effect. Together with recent digital steps, it's the biggest update for foreigners in Vietnam in years. This article sums up the key changes — and includes a quick visa-type table so you know which category fits you.
What the amended law changes
The amendment updates the legal framework for entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners, with new provisions on residence management, control of foreign nationals and data integration across authorities. The aim: more transparency, consistency between agencies, and alignment with international practice.
The clearest direction is digitalization: data is linked to strengthen monitoring, while procedures are streamlined for eligible applicants.
Change 1 — New UĐ1/UĐ2 talent visas (up to 5 years)
From 1 July 2026, two new visa types appear:
- UĐ1 — for the high-quality digital-technology workforce and other incentive-eligible cases.
- UĐ2 — for the spouse and children under 18 of a UĐ1 holder.
Both are valid for up to 5 years, aiming to attract talent and their families. This is good news for tech experts, engineers and those working in priority sectors.
Change 2 — A more digital system
- VNeID for immigration procedures: from 1 June 2026, many procedures (entry approval letters, visa extensions, work visas, exit visas, Temporary Residence Cards – TRC) are handled through organizational VNeID accounts. Authorities are working on a path for those without a TRC — watch for updates.
- Digital arrival card (pre-arrival QR): already in use at several airports, including Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) — see our dedicated guide.
- Data integration: information is shared between agencies for monitoring and security.
Change 3 — E-Visa reaches further
- 90-day E-Visa for all nationalities, in single- and multiple-entry versions.
- 83 checkpoints (airports, land borders, seaports) accept e-visas after 41 gates were added under Resolution 389/NQ-CP.
What stays the same
- A passport valid for at least 6 months.
- A valid entry document (visa/e-visa or visa exemption).
- Proof of your purpose of entry when asked.
- Temporary residence registration via your accommodation.

What it means for you
- Tourists: little changes — still a 90-day e-visa or visa exemption; remember the pre-arrival QR card if flying into a covered airport.
- Long-stay workers: factor in VNeID-based processing; allow extra time for visa/TRC steps during the transition.
- Investors: check which ĐT tier fits your capital level.
- Tech experts: consider UĐ1 if eligible — up to 5 years, with UĐ2 for your family.
Also from 1 July 2026, a new health-quarantine framework (Decree 165/2026) exists — but per the Ministry of Health's clarification, the health declaration is not routinely mandatory. See our dedicated article for the accurate picture.
