Who this is for: Russian travelers (and the agents who help them) stuck on Vietnam's e-visa payment step. If you keep seeing "payment failed", this explains why — and what actually works.
Three traps nobody warns you about
Trap 1 — Russian bank cards simply don't work
The government fee on the official portal evisa.gov.vn is accepted only from a foreign-bank card (Visa/Mastercard issued outside Russia).
What doesn't work:
- Visa/Mastercard issued by Russian banks — blocked at the payment-system level.
- "MIR" cards — not accepted by the portal.
- UnionPay from any country — also declined. This surprises people who get a UnionPay card specifically for this.
- A VPN doesn't help. The block is based on the card issuer, not your location.
Russia's Consulate General in Da Nang confirms the same: the visa fee cannot be paid with Russian bank cards; they recommend a foreign-bank card or a visa agency.
Trap 2 — A failed payment wipes your form
The most frustrating part. You carefully type your name, passport number, dates, hotel address, upload photos, pass the captcha — the payment fails, and you start over from scratch.
The lesson: solve the payment question BEFORE you start filling in the form.
Trap 3 — You can't apply for an e-visa from inside Vietnam
Many people discover this too late — already in the country, with their 45 visa-free days running out. The system sees you're inside Vietnam, and the application is almost certainly refused. The fee is non-refundable.
This is precisely why Visa Runs and Border Runs exist: you physically exit and re-enter to refresh your stay.
Do Russian travelers even need an e-visa?
Honestly: not always.
- Staying under 45 days? No visa needed — Russian citizens enter on a passport, with visa exemption valid until 14 March 2028.
- Staying longer than 45 days? Then you need a 90-day e-visa, or a Visa Run/Border Run once your exemption expires.
- Planning a hop to Cambodia, Thailand or Laos and back? Get multiple entry, or your second entry will hit a closed visa.
Cost and timing per the official portal
- Single entry: $25, up to 90 days.
- Multiple entry: $50, unlimited entries within the same 90 days.
- Official processing: up to 15 working days. Often faster in practice — but always leave a buffer.
Mind the holidays — immigration pauses processing:
- Tết (Lunar New Year) — 14–21 February 2026.
- 30 April / 1 May — around a 9-day block in 2026.
- 2 September — a 5–7 day pause.
Four ways to solve the payment
- A foreign-bank card (Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Turkey) — the most reliable if you already have one.
- Ask a friend with a suitable card. Perfectly acceptable: what matters is who's named on the application, not who owns the card.
- A visa agency. They file and pay the fee with their card. The typical market markup is around $30–50.
- "Pay-for-you" services. They work, but you still wrestle with the form — so all the form-error risk stays with you.
