If you've married a Vietnamese citizen, you probably don't need visa runs

Many foreigners married to Vietnamese partners keep crossing the border to renew their visa every 90 days — because they don't know there's a far better option.

💍 As the spouse of a Vietnamese citizen, you qualify for a TT-category TEMPORARY RESIDENCE CARD — allowing a stay of up to 3 YEARS, multiple entries, with NO visa runs.

This isn't a "single piece of paper" thing. It's a THREE-STAGE route, in order. Let's walk through each.

🗺️ THE BIG PICTURE — A THREE-STAGE ROUTE

Stage 1: 📋 Register the marriage legally in Vietnam ⬇️ Stage 2: 🛂 TT visa (TT symbol — family category) ⬇️ Stage 3: 🪪 TT-category Temporary Residence Card — up to 3 years

Each stage is the foundation for the next. Skip the order and you get stuck.

📋 STAGE 1 — REGISTER THE MARRIAGE

The marriage must be legally registered before it unlocks any residence right.

• If registering in Vietnam: at the commune-level People's Committee (⚠️ since mid-2025, civil-status authority moved to the COMMUNE level — different from before; confirm where you register)
• If already married abroad: you need the "marriage note" (ghi chú kết hôn) process so the marriage is recognised in Vietnam

Documents usually needed:

• A single-status certificate from your country (consular-legalized + notarized translation)
• A certificate of mental fitness/capacity to consent (usually issued within 6 months)
• Passport, and other documents the civil-status office requires

💡 Because each country has its own legalization process, start the "single-status" step back home EARLY — it's usually the slowest link.

🛂 STAGE 2 — TT VISA (FAMILY CATEGORY)

A visa bearing the "TT" symbol is issued to — among others — the father, mother, spouse, or child of a Vietnamese citizen.

• You can enter on a tourist visa / E-Visa, then CONVERT to a TT visa after completing the marriage registration
• Your sponsor is your Vietnamese-citizen spouse
• The visa in use must carry the TT symbol to proceed to the residence card in the next stage

🪪 STAGE 3 — TT-CATEGORY RESIDENCE CARD (UP TO 3 YEARS)

This is the destination: a card that lets you stay long-term without renewing a visa.

Documents usually needed:

• Passport valid for at least ~13 months (the card must be at least 30 days shorter than the passport's remaining validity)
• Marriage certificate (notarized in Vietnam, or the marriage-note version if registered abroad)
• Your Vietnamese spouse's ID (CCCD) + residence confirmation
• Sponsorship form (NA7) and the TRC application form (NA8)
• 3×4 photos, white background, taken within 6 months

🆕 What's new: many steps can now be filed online via the National Public Service Portal — you'll need an electronic ID account. Check the online channel before queueing.

⚖️ THE DECISION: TT RESIDENCE CARD OR 5-YEAR VISA?

Spouses of Vietnamese citizens usually have two long-term options. Choose by how you LIVE:

If you stay in Vietnam continuously for more than 6 months at a time → the TT residence card is cleaner. If you fly in and out, under 6 months each time → a 5-year visa can be handy.

• No visa runs for up to 3 years — multiple entries, freely
• Unlocks services: easier to open a bank account, sign long-term leases, do civil transactions
• Sponsor family: you can sponsor parents/children for their own residence cards

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "Marrying a Vietnamese automatically lets me stay." → NO. Marriage only unlocks the RIGHT to apply for a TT visa / residence card. You still file the application.

❌ "Once married, I never have to think about visas again." → Not yet. Until you hold the residence card, your current visa/exemption still has an expiry — don't overstay.

❌ "A marriage registered abroad is automatically recognised in Vietnam." → You need the "marriage note" (ghi chú kết hôn) for recognition; foreign documents need legalization + notarized translation.

❌ "Marriage is still registered at district level like before." → It changed. Since mid-2025, civil-status authority moved to the commune level. Confirm where to register.

❌ "With a TT residence card, the 5-year visa is pointless." → It depends how you live. If you come and go, under 6 months each time, the 5-year visa can be handier.

❌ "I still have to do visa runs even though I married a Vietnamese." → Usually NOT, if you get the TT-category residence card. That's the whole point of this article.
