Your first week shapes most of the experience
Hanoi is Vietnam's capital and the gateway to the north — Noi Bai International Airport receives most arrivals to the northern region. It's a wonderful city once you've settled in: coffee, lakes, the Old Quarter, legendary street food.
But the first few days — tired, no SIM, no cash, overwhelming traffic — shape most of how you feel about the place.
🧭 This isn't a list of tourist sights. It's 5 practical things to do RIGHT AWAY, in the right order, so your first week in Hanoi runs smoothly.
1️⃣ FIRST — FROM NOI BAI AIRPORT TO THE CENTRE
Noi Bai (HAN) is about 27–35 km north of central Hanoi — roughly a 40–60 minute drive depending on traffic.
Note as you land:
- Terminal T2 is for international flights, T1 for domestic — the two buildings are ~850m apart, with a free shuttle bus between them
- Change a little VND cash at the airport for your first day; there are ATMs and bank booths in the post-immigration area. City shops may give better rates, but don't leave the airport with an empty wallet
- To the centre: Grab (price shown in-app, no bargaining) is easiest; the airport bus is cheaper but may need a transfer; for taxis, confirm the meter/fare before you go
💡 Don't get quoted a wild fare when you land tired. Book via app or arrange a pickup in advance — it's the calm option.
2️⃣ CHOOSE YOUR AREA — HANOI HAS SEVERAL "PERSONALITIES"
Hanoi isn't one uniform block. Each area has a very different rhythm:
🌿 Tay Ho (West Lake) — the number-one expat area Around West Lake, the largest international community: restaurants, cafés, coworking, gyms, international schools. Calm, lovely lake views, great for families and long-stayers. Also the most expensive area in Hanoi.
🏛️ Ba Dinh — administrative centre, quiet Home to embassies, government buildings and monuments. Wide streets, green space, close to both the centre and Tay Ho. Good if you want quiet but convenient.
🏮 Hoan Kiem / Old Quarter — the heart, walkable Right by Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter. Lively, everything on foot, very touristy. Great for a short stay — but loud and crowded.
💡 Long-stayer tip: book a hotel for the first 1–2 weeks, then view apartments in person before renting monthly. Online photos often differ from reality.
3️⃣ CONNECTIVITY — SORT IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE AIRPORT
Without a Vietnamese number and data, everything is hard: Grab, reservations, OTP codes, contacting your landlord.

4️⃣ GETTING AROUND — AND A NOTE ON THE AIR
In the city, Grab (bikes & cars) has good coverage and transparent pricing. Long-stayers often rent a scooter by the month — but remember:
🪪 Driving licence: a foreign licence or International Driving Permit (IDP) has its own recognition conditions in Vietnam. Riding without valid papers means fines and insurance trouble if anything happens.
😷 Winter air: Hanoi is known for spells of poor air quality in the winter months (roughly October to March). Many foreigners track the AQI, use filtering masks and run an air purifier indoors during this period. Not a reason to panic — just something to know in advance.
5️⃣ THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE — KEEP YOUR VISA VALID
This is the one newcomers leave for last — and pay for. Handle it early, in your first week.
What are you in Vietnam on?
- Visa exemption (if your nationality qualifies) → usually 45 days, not extendable on the spot
- E-Visa → up to 90 days
☠️ THE DATE ON YOUR ENTRY STAMP IS YOUR DATE — not the one on your E-Visa.
An officer can stamp a different date. Right after you clear immigration at Noi Bai, check the stamp and note that exact date.

Want to stay longer than your period?
Neither the exemption nor the E-Visa can be extended from inside Vietnam. For a fresh period, you must exit and re-enter — usually getting a new 90-day E-Visa before you come back.

🔔 And never overstay
An overstay isn't just a fine. An overstayer is NOT ELIGIBLE TO EXIT — you can't go to the border to fix it. For a newcomer still finding their feet, forgetting the date is a very real risk.

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "I'll just grab a Grab straight out of the airport." → You need data first. Without an eSIM/Vietnamese number, opening the app and getting codes is hard. Get an eSIM before leaving the airport.
❌ "My foreign card works everywhere." → Not necessarily. Many places in Hanoi still prefer cash; some foreign cards have trouble. Always keep VND cash as backup.
❌ "I have a 90-day E-Visa, so I'll just extend it." → WRONG. E-Visas can't be extended from inside Vietnam. A fresh 90 days means exit and re-enter.
❌ "The date on my E-Visa is when I must leave." → NO. The date on your ENTRY STAMP is what counts. Check the stamp on arrival.
❌ "A domestic flight out of Hanoi resets my visa." → NO. Domestic flights don't count. You must cross an international border.
