Visa Run Tour or Border Run Tour? Pick the Right One or Waste Your Money (2026)

Both go to the same border, but a Visa Run Tour and a Border Run Tour solve two different problems. Pick the wrong one and you pay for something you don't need — or worse, can't re-enter. Here's how to tell them apart and choose the right one for your situation.

Two tours, one border — but they solve two different things

Foreigners in Vietnam often confuse "Visa Run" and "Border Run". Both are border-gate day tours — you go out to an international border gate and come back. But they serve completely different needs.

🔑 In short: a Visa Run Tour = you go out and come back with a NEW 90-day E-Visa. A Border Run Tour = you just need to cross the border (you already have a new E-Visa, or you're resetting a visa-exemption stamp).

Pick the wrong one and you pay for a service you don't need, or come back without valid documents to re-enter. Here's how to tell them apart.

🟦 Visa Run Tour — when you need a NEW E-Visa

For people in Vietnam on a 90-day E-Visa that's about to expire who want to keep staying.

Because an E-Visa can't be applied for while you're inside Vietnam, you must exit and re-enter with a new one. A Visa Run Tour is a same-day border-gate tour with support to renew your 90-day E-Visa — you return to Nha Trang the same day with a new visa.

Includes: pickup + border formality support + E-Visa renewal support.

🟩 Border Run Tour — when you JUST need to cross the border

For two groups:

  1. People who already have a new (approved) E-Visa and just need to exit–enter to activate it;
  2. People who are visa-exempt and want to reset their stay with one exit–entry.

A Border Run Tour is a border-gate tour without E-Visa service — so it's leaner and cheaper than a Visa Run Tour.

Includes: transport to the border and back; no E-Visa service.

⚠️ On visa exemption: many nationalities (including Russia, South Korea…) get a 45-day exemption under Resolution 44/NQ-CP; 12 other EU countries get 45 days for tourism only (Res. 229). Resetting a stamp via a border run is common — but policy can change, so check official sources.

🧭 How to choose, fast

  • "My E-Visa is expiring, I need a new one."Visa Run Tour
  • "I already have a new E-Visa, I just need to exit–enter."Border Run Tour
  • "I'm visa-exempt, I just want to reset my stay."Border Run Tour
  • "I'm not sure which category I'm in." → use the free Advisor tool or message support

🔔 Don't overstay while you decide

Overstaying in Vietnam can mean fines of tens of millions of VND and even an entry ban.

🤝 Both are tours run by licensed travel units

Whichever you choose, it works the same way: you send a request to hold a tour spot → get a HOLD CODE → a licensed travel unit contacts you to advise the final price and guide payment.

💡 ViEntry is a technology platform that connects you with the travel unit — it does not transport passengers, sell tickets, or take your money. The travel unit takes payment directly and is responsible for delivering the tour.

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "Visa Run and Border Run are the same."They're not. A Visa Run Tour renews your E-Visa; a Border Run Tour just crosses the border.

❌ "A Border Run gets me a new E-Visa too."No. A Border Run has no E-Visa service. If you need a new visa, choose a Visa Run Tour.

❌ "Just pick the cheaper one to save." → If you need a new E-Visa but pick a Border Run, you'll have no valid visa to re-enter — wasted time and money.

❌ "Is this buying a bus ticket across the border?"No. It's registering to join a border-gate day tour run by a travel unit.

❌ "If I'm visa-exempt I can reset as many times as I want." → Exemption policy has conditions and can change; check official sources, and consider a 90-day E-Visa for long stays.
