Vietnam's "best time" depends on where you're going
Many people search for "the best time to visit Vietnam" hoping for one answer. But Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km north to south — so in the same month, the three regions can have completely different weather.
🔑 There's no single "best time" for the whole country. Only the best time for the REGION you want. Choose by destination, not by the country as a whole.
🗺️ The core idea: three regions, three weather patterns
Vietnam has three climate zones:
- The North (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long): four distinct seasons, with a cool-to-cold winter
- Central (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang): a distinct dry season and wet/typhoon season
- The South (HCMC, Mekong, Phu Quoc): hot year-round, with just a dry and a wet season
So read the section for the region you're heading to.
🏔️ The North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa)
- Around October → April: cooler and drier — usually the most comfortable for sightseeing
- Winter (around Dec → Feb): can be quite cold and damp/misty, especially in the northern mountains (Sapa can get very cold)
- Summer (around May → Sept): hot, humid, with rain showers
→ City: Hanoi for first-time foreigners
🏖️ Central (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang)
- Around February → August: dry, sunny season — ideal for the beaches (Da Nang, Hoi An)
- Around September → December: wet/typhoon season, with the heaviest rain and possible flooding around October–November (Hue and Hoi An are prone to it)
- Nha Trang is usually drier with less rain than other central spots — its best window is often around January → August

☀️ The South (HCMC, Mekong, Phu Quoc)
Hot year-round, just two seasons:
- Around December → April: dry season — usually the best
- Around May → November: wet season, usually afternoon showers that pass — not necessarily trip-ruining
→ City: HCMC for first-time foreigners
📅 When to go, by purpose
- Central beaches & sun → around Feb–Aug
- Exploring the North, Sapa → around Oct–Apr (bring warm clothes for winter)
- The South & Mekong → around Dec–Apr (dry season)
- Avoiding Central rain/typhoons → skip around Oct–Nov
- Want to travel the whole country in one trip? Around Feb–Apr is often the most balanced window for all three regions
🎎 A note on Tết: during Lunar New Year (usually around Jan–Feb, it shifts with the lunar calendar), many shops/services close for several days and travel gets very crowded. Look up Tết dates for your year and plan ahead.
💡 If you're staying long, not just visiting
- Weather affects which region to base in (e.g. avoid Central's typhoon season if you dislike flooding)
- On a long E-Visa stay, time your renewals away from peak/Tết. A Visa Run Tour arranged flexibly per group is easier during the busy winter.

⚠️ Common misconceptions
❌ "There's one best season for all of Vietnam." → No. The three regions differ; choose by destination.
❌ "The South rains all day in the wet season." → Usually just afternoon showers that pass — you can still get out and about.
❌ "Vietnam is always hot, so no warm clothes needed." → The North in winter can be quite cold; Sapa colder still.
❌ "Central Vietnam is sunny any month." → Around Oct–Nov you may hit rain/typhoons/flooding — plan around it.
❌ "I'll come at Tết for the fun — surely everything's open." → Many places close for several days at Tết; plan ahead.
