Customs takes minutes — unless you bring the wrong thing

Most travellers clear Vietnamese customs in minutes with no issue. Trouble only comes when you exceed the allowance, carry restricted goods, or forget to declare something.

And there's ONE item many modern travellers still carry — not realising it's now fully banned.

❌ E-CIGARETTES (VAPES) and HEATED-TOBACCO products are now BANNED in Vietnam — even for personal use. If customs find one, they will CONFISCATE and DESTROY it on the spot.

This is the biggest trap for today's travellers. Leave the vape at home.

To clear customs smoothly, sort your bags into THREE GROUPS.

❌ GROUP 1 — NEVER BRING

• 🚭 E-cigarettes, vapes, heated-tobacco devices and liquids — banned, confiscated/destroyed
• 💊 Drugs and narcotics — serious offence, severe penalties
• 🔫 Weapons, explosives, ammunition
• 📕 Banned publications and materials

These have no "allowance" — the answer is simply NO.

✅ GROUP 2 — DUTY-FREE (WITHIN THE ALLOWANCE)

Allowances apply PER adult (18+), for personal use, and CANNOT be pooled across a family.

🍷 Alcohol (choose one) 1.5 L of spirits over 20% · OR 2 L under 20% · OR 3 L of beer

🚬 Tobacco (choose one) 200 cigarettes · OR 20 cigars · OR 250 g of loose tobacco

🎁 Personal items & gifts Other goods (beyond alcohol/tobacco) with a total value ≤ VND 10 million (~USD 400)

Exceeding the allowance doesn't mean confiscation — it means you DECLARE it and may pay duty on the excess. Just use the red channel.

⚠️ Tobacco and alcohol allowances cannot be pooled between family members. One person carrying 400 cigarettes "for a couple" is one person in violation.

⚠️ GROUP 3 — ALLOWED, BUT YOU MUST DECLARE (RED CHANNEL)

These aren't banned, but you must declare them so you don't become an accidental "smuggler":

• 💵 Cash over USD 5,000 (or equivalent foreign currency) or over VND 15 million
• 🥇 Gold of 300 g or more

→ USD 5,000 and 300 grams of gold: the two numbers at the border

• 🍎 Fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds, plants · unprocessed meat, dairy, eggs — biosecurity, usually restricted
• 🚁 Drones, professional cameras, high-powered radio transmitters — often need a pre-approved permit
• 💊 Narcotic / specially controlled medication — needs documentation and a prescription

💊 MEDICATION — HOW TO BRING IT RIGHT

• You may bring personal-use medication in reasonable quantities
• Carry the prescription (ideally in English) to explain it if asked
• For narcotic / specially controlled drugs, you need the right paperwork — check before you fly

💻 ELECTRONICS — WHEN THEY DRAW ATTENTION

• One laptop, phone, tablet, camera = personal, usually no issue
• Several new devices in unopened packaging can look commercial → attracts attention
• For expensive/professional gear, keeping receipts helps answer questions quickly (including when you leave Vietnam)

🚦 GREEN CHANNEL OR RED CHANNEL?

🟢 GREEN: you're within allowance, nothing to declare 🔴 RED: you exceed the allowance, or carry anything in Group 3

Taking the green channel when you should have declared risks being treated as a non-declaration. If in doubt, go red and ask.

🔔 And once you're through — don't forget the visa

Being busy with luggage and forgetting the visa date is a real thing. An overstay means you're not eligible to exit.

⚠️ Common misconceptions

❌ "A vape for personal use is fine to bring." → NO. E-cigarettes are banned in Vietnam, even for personal use. It will be confiscated.

❌ "A family can pool the tobacco/alcohol allowance onto one person." → You can't pool it. The allowance is per adult.

❌ "I can bring any amount of cash as long as I say nothing." → Over USD 5,000 or VND 15 million must be DECLARED. Not declaring risks penalties.

❌ "Fruit and seeds are fine to bring in." → NO. Fresh produce, seeds, unprocessed meat/dairy are subject to biosecurity, usually restricted.

❌ "A drone is personal, so I'll just bring it." → Be careful. Drones/transmitters often need a pre-approved permit.

❌ "I'll just take the green channel to be quick." → Only if you're genuinely within allowance. If you exceed or carry declarables, go red.
